March 19 Meeting: Engaging Across Diversity

Along with some regular business, we are welcoming special guest Darlene Seto to our March meeting to help stimulate a conversation on how the Vancouver Food Policy Council and other food system communities can meaningfully ‘Engage Across Diversity’.

Darlene is the program manager for SFU’s LiVWELL Research Group, where much of her work involves developing community-based research projects with diverse immigrant and community groups.  An advocate for ways to meaningfully bridge cultural inclusion and sustainability practice, she holds a MA from UBC in Resource Management and Environmental Studies, where her graduate work looked at the engagement of diverse publics in Vancouver’s community gardens.

Darlene will be presenting a summary of the results from her masters research work, with an emphasis on looking ahead to ways the food system and Vancouver Food Policy Council can continue to move forward on the meeting’s subject theme.

Join us March 19 6-8:30 PM, Town Hall Room, City Hall.

January 22 Meeting: A Citizen’s Guide to the ALR

We expect that our first meeting of 2014 is going to be a big one. The coverage and conversation about the Agricultural Land Reserve has been very active recently raising some questions and concerns. The Vancouver Food Policy Council is bringing together a panel of government, farming, and academic experts to share what they believe is the most important information on the province’s ALR for the VFPC and public to know: A Citizen’s Guide to the ALR. Panel presentations will be followed by discussion.

If you care about the future of agriculture in this province, we suggest you join us January 22 6-8:30 PM, Town Hall Room, City Hall.

The panel will begin at 7 PM with:

Kim Sutherland, BC Ministry of Agriculture

Bill Zylman, W&A Farms

Dr. Lenore Newman, University of Fraser Valley

Dr. Art Bomke

November 13 Meeting: Intercultural Food Literacy & the Hua Foundation

We are back in our regularly scheduled location and time for our next meeting November 13, 6-8:30 PM, Town Hall Room, City Hall.

This month we are welcoming the Hua Foundation.

Hua Foundation is a new youth-driven nonprofit that grew out of the program Shark Truth. Their mission is to reunite the worlds of cultural heritage and environmental action in their community starting with the topic of healthy, sustainable eating. What does that mean around our family’s dinner tables? Where can we get locally-grown organic bak choi? These are some of the questions they’re trying to answer. At this Food Policy Meeting, they will present their idea to start an “Asian CSA” through partnerships of local urban farmers as a sort of Case Study. The short-term goal is to get a conversation around building a market for local, organic Asian produce but what should the CSA model look like? What are good long-term objectives for making it accessible to the masses? Should it be through supermarkets? Encouraging people to grow on their own? What will it take to support our community in localizing/making our diets as sustainable as possible? Can the City of Vancouver support these goals, in what ways?
